Americk Packaging are finalising their plans for the forthcoming FRUIT LOGISTICA Trade Show in Berlin. Over 65,000 trade visitors from 135 countries are expected over 3 days, commencing 3rd February. The exhibition gathers fruit and vegetable producers, importers, exporters, wholesalers and retailers in addition to packaging specialists.

Part of the flexibles division of Americk Packaging Group, Americk ASP Flexibles is one of the fastest growing packaging suppliers to the fresh produce market in Europe. Sustained growth has led to a recent decision to move to a new site in Wigan. The 80,000sq.ft. facility is over 3 times the size of the existing location, providing much needed room for the expansion of their manufacturing and logistics operations and will also house a brand new state of the art laboratory.

Production capacity will also receive a boost with the installation of a new 1500mm wide F&K 8+1 colour press capable of High Definition Flexo print quality and automatic registration for fast change overs. It is anticipated the combined investment of £7M will increase capacity to 175M linear metres a year from this spring.

Managing Director Steve Ellis commented “This significant investment will provide flexibility and room for growth.” He continues “Servicing the fresh produce market demands flexibility, the highest degree of customer service, technical innovation and a thorough understanding of the unique demands of this market. Our customers are continually striving to meet consumer demand whilst managing waste and our ability to provide a bespoke packaging solution, that maximises the performance of their product, often with very short lead times, is absolutely critical.”

Innovation is important to any packaging organisation and this aspect is expected to be a key theme at FRUIT LOGISTICA. Americk Packaging are poised to promote its NaturSense™ solution at the fair, demonstrating its wealth of knowledge on the subject of shelf-life extension. Essentially NaturSense™ is an in-pack sensor, developed to monitor true environmental conditions, such as humidity, temperature and concentration of various gases. From packing house to the shelf.

Data captured throughout the supply chain, enables analysis that can identify required improvements to increase the shelf-life and freshness of your product. The full range of produce packaging including punnets, trays, paper produce bags, Lamination, Hot Needle perforation, Laser Technology, Micro/ Macro Perforation, Centre folded films, Back Seal bags, Anti-mist and labelling will be on display on Stand A-01 in Hall 7.2c FRUIT LOGISTICA.

The latest addition to the group, Americk Advantage, who offer a multitude of services including electronic article surveillance (EAS), multi leaf labels and studio services, will be showcasing the newest products to the company’s portfolio including pouches and environmentally friendly pulp and plastic punnets.

In the recent MTAA blog ‘World Wide Personalisation’ the trend in personalised packaging was mentioned. What wasn’t covered was Americk Packaging Group’s involvement in some of the memorable campaigns that have run in recent years.

    Share a coke
In 2013, Americk Packaging’s Lough Erne site (formerly Webtech) was chosen to be one of the five conventional label printers involved in the ‘Share a Coke’ campaign. They worked closely with their digital print partner in order to create the bespoke labels. This project was unlike any other the company had previously undertaken, especially in the respect that they had to work cooperatively with some of their competitors. This was a necessity in order to achieve such a mammoth task, as it was far too large a project for one printer to achieve – over 1 billion custom labels were printed across Europe alone.

    Interesting facts about Coke:

    - Over 40 hours went into matching the famous Coca-cola red for digital print.
    - The project required Six bottling partners; five conventional label printers; seven digital printers.
    - Eight different label sizes were produced for 375-ml, 500-ml and 1-liter PET bottles

In 2014, the soft drink giant A.G BARR were the proud sponsors of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth games where they ran a campaign which saw 57 different tartan patterns created and printed on their Irn-Bru bottles. Americk were the proud company working in conjunction with a third party and thanks to the expertise gained from previous bespoke campaigns were chosen to coordinate and lead the project and print the labels.

Adrian Troy, Head of Marketing at AG Barr said: ‘Whether you’re 100 per cent Scottish or just have a dash of ginger in your family tree, Bru’s Your Clan gives people the chance to check out their roots, sport their clan colours a and make Irn-Bru their own.’

    IRN-BRU’s personalised tartan
This was not the first time A.G BARR had ran a personalised campaign, after the launch of the Share-a-coke campaign IRN-BRU ran their own parody scottish version which saw the likes of ‘Tam’, ‘Senga’, ‘Rab’ and ‘Fanny’, the latter which is currently being used in their TV advertising.

    Interesting facts about Irn-Bru:

    - Irn-Bru is the third best selling soft drink in the UK
    - The Irn-Bru name came about in July 1946, when a change in laws dictated a re-branding, as the drink is not physically brewed.
    - Only three people in the whole world reportedly know the recipe to make Irn-Bru
