The future of soft plastics
The Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in conjunction with SPE, will be running a technical dinner to discuss the Future of Soft Plastics on the 8 May in Melbourne and all of industry is invited to attend.
Both the AIP and the SPE, along with their many industry members, are concerned about current discussions and challenges directed at ‘single use plastic’ packaging and this dinner will help to guide you and your teams to better understand the current and true state-of-play with Soft Plastics in Australia.
Discussions will include understanding the issues surrounding Soft Plastics and the important benefits this packaging format brings (food safety, convenience and reducing food waste). Speakers will provide insights into some of the excellent initiatives that are already underway in the country to effectively recycle this packaging format.
This technical dinner will focus on soft plastics and the current recycling programs being undertaken and the evening is aimed at challenging the industry to be more involved in promoting a better understanding of the benefits and opportunities for soft plastics.

AIP Foodbank Volunteer Day

AIP Members and industry colleagues are invited to participate in the Foodbank Victoria Warehouse Volunteering Program. The AIP Foodbank Warehouse Volunteering Program will provide you the opportunity to better understand how Foodbank works and will be a combination of picking and packing of on-line food orders and packing mixed grocery boxes.
The on-line orders have been placed by many of the 470 charity partners who look after the thousands of Victorians currently experiencing food insecurity. The mixed groceries items are donated by school students, community groups, clubs and corporate organisations who run food drives to provide the ingredients for the food boxes.
Their charity partners are able to order these boxes which they then pass on to those families or individuals who need that extra help with grocery items. Each volunteer would have the opportunity to work in both areas.
O-I Sydney Site Visit

AIP Members and Industry Colleagues are invited to visit O-I Sydney facility which has been manufacturing glass containers in Penrith since 1971. Every day, around 4,000,000 beer, wine, spirit and soft drink bottles and food jars roll off the Penrith production lines.
The O-I Sydney plant has a long history of manufacturing glass containers from recycled glass containers. Glass containers manufactured at the O-I Sydney site are stored in a purpose-built warehouse. From there, containers are sent away to breweries, wineries and other beverage and food suppliers.
Today the plant supplies all major users of glass containers in NSW and a number of major customers in both Victoria and Queensland. Two furnaces and six machine lines produce Beer, Food and spirit containers in a variety of colours including – Flint, Amber, Emerald Green, French Green and Antique Green.
The plant is the largest glass container manufacturing plant in Australia. The output exceeds 3.7 million units per day, 23 million units per week, or 1.37 billion per year.

Coca-Cola Amatil Site Visit

AIP members and industry colleagues will be able to see Coca-Cola Amatil’s new bottling and warehouse facility, which is now the company’s largest plant in Australia. The facility supports hundreds of jobs and it is capable of manufacturing more than 90 million unit cases of drinks for national and export markets each year.
Attendees will be able to tour the plant and see high-speed beverage manufacturing including cans, PET and Glass across several lines producing CDSs, Sensitive Beverages and Dairy Products.

Orora Botany B9 Paper Mill Site Visit

AIP Members and industry colleagues are invited to attend a site visit to Orora Botany Paper Mill on the 13 March. All attendees will have the opportunity to obtain an overview of the Recycling and Paper making side of the Orora business.
The Orora Recycling business provides services including the collection, sorting and recycling of waste from industry, supermarkets and households. Visitors will see a state-of-the-art high-speed paper machine that manufactures 100% recycled packaging paper and better understand the Orora Botany Paper Mill.

Every year the Australian Institute of Packaging (AIP), in collaboration with other industry associations, spend their Christmas Party differently. Rather than holding the standard Christmas Party the AIP Members are invited to be a part of something very special; packing 1000x Family Hampers and 300x Ladies Hampers which are given to Foodbank to help those in need during the holiday season.
Over the last seven years, our industry has packed over 6500 hampers to the value of in excess of $700,000 for people in need, with all of the items either donated, or the funds raised by the Association and the wider industry. The AIP invites you, your staff, colleagues and families to come and help us pack the hampers on the 7 of December. All ages are invited to attend this special event with the oldest volunteer to date being 85 and the youngest 5. Help us make a difference in someone else’s life.
This year, the AIP packing day will be running from 10:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. on Friday 7 December at Eagle Farm Race Track - Function Area 230 Lancaster Road, Ascot 4007

The mixed grocery volunteering program involves physically packing hampers of food staples that have been donated by generous members in our community via workplace, school and individual food collections. These mixed grocery hampers are distributed via their network of 470 charities they support in Victoria, to pass on to the many disadvantaged Victorians currently experiencing food insecurity. Currently 1 in 7 people in Victoria lack access to nutritional and affordable food. This is why these mixed grocery hampers are vital to our community.

This indicates there is a need for a new recycling revolution, but this will require some innovation, leadership and an increased level of knowledge by packaging designers. In August 2015, Planet Ark launched the Australian Recycling Label, with Officeworks being the first business to adopt the label on its products to help its consumers to do the right thing.

Attendees will have the opportunity to visit the Kyabram Food Can Manufacturing Facility where they will see the Tinplate food can and nutrition can manufacturing process.
Jamestrong Packaging has opened a 6500 square-metre warehouse in Kyabram, Victoria, adjacent to the can maker's existing manufacturing facility. The warehouse features a positive air-flow system that prevents ingress of air and any potential contaminants. The system makes the facility a clean environment for the manufacture of food packaging.
Jamestrong managing director John Bigley said the acquisition of the $2m-plus warehouse was another step in its commitment to enhancing food safety since it was acquired by Shanghai-YuanLong Investment Co Ltd. The existing Kyabram manufacturing facility produces steel food cans from 52mm to 153mm, and can ends can be supplied from 49mm to 153mm in diameter.

Multipack is Australia's leading FMCG contract packager, specialising in retail and promotional packaging of consumers goods on two distinct state-of-the-art sites – FOOD at Ingleburn, and therapeutics and household products at Moorebank. Attendees will start the tour at the Multipack head office and retail site at Moorebank and then head over to the new Multipack FOOD facility. The site visits will then be followed by lunch.

Importantly the ARL is underpinned by evidence, which is obtained from the Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal, or PREP, that was developed by GreenChip and Planet Ark with the support of the APC. The dinner will include presentations from the three organisations who have lead this initiative so that packaging designers are better equipped to contribute actively to this recycling revolution. The presentations will then be followed by a panel discussion.

This site visit will provide attendees the opportunity to see both the state-of-the-art Beverage Can facility and the Visy Board site. The facility, costing approximately $86 million, is one of the most modern in the world. The plant was constructed to meet growing demand, as a result Visy customers will have access to a broad range of world-class lightweight cans.
The Yatala facility features the highest levels of automation, robotics and process control systems available to the corrugated packaging industry worldwide.
This site visit will take approximately two hours.
