New Billerud Flute is used as middle layer in corrugated board packaging for demanding transport and climate conditions. The material's already superior strength has now been increased by up to eight percent, meaning that customers can produce boxes of the same strength while using less material. This in turn leads to lighter packaging and increased efficiency at every step of the logistics chain, resulting in both environmental and cost benefits.
"Thanks to the improved strength of New Billerud Flute, it is possible to go down in grammage and still retain packaging performance", says Henrik Nilsson, Senior Technical Service Manager at BillerudKorsnäs.
With New Billerud Flute it is even possible to create strong, lightweight corrugated packaging that can replace heavy wooden or plywood boxes. This gives customers in the industrial segment an opportunity to reduce both their costs and environmental impact.
The new and improved fluting has been made possible by an investment of 180 million Swedish crowns in paper machine 6 at BillerudKorsnäs' Gruvön plant. As well as increasing strength, the investment has increased the production capacity for New Billerud Flute by about 40,000 tonnes per year.
