Eye drops are liquid drops applied directly to the surface of the eye, usually in small amounts such as a single drop or a few drops. Eye drops may also contain one or more medications to treat a wide variety of eye diseases. As the eyes are so delicate, it is important that the eye drop packaging be user-friendly in order to easily dispense the treatment.
Eye drops have a lower risk of side effects than oral medicines, and such risk can be further minimized by occluding the lacrimal punctum for a short time after instilling drops.
Although most bottles of eye drops contain preservatives to inhibit contamination once open, these will not prevent contamination indefinitely. Ophthalmologists recommend keeping bottles for no longer than three months after opening. Eye drops that contain no preservatives are usually packaged in single-use tube vials and preservative-free eye drop bottles.
