Leading retort packaging specialist Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Grootegast has developed an innovative stand up pouch for a new premium snack brand.
The Minigustos label from Bayer, is the world’s first premium brand for tasty, crunchy, and attractive snack vegetables with a longer shelf life. The first vegetable to be released under the Minigustos label is a snack cucumber.
The extended shelf life properties of the food are made possible with a modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) solution from Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Grootegast. The combination of specially selected materials and a micro-perforation allows the product inside to breath and remain fresher for longer. The packaging extends the shelf life of the fruits and ensures a crunchy taste up to 12 days after harvesting.
With its first offering from Minigustos, Bayer aims to fill a void in Northern European, Canadian, and US Markets where retailers and consumers have increasingly been asking for a tasty and crunchy snack cucumber with a longer shelf-life.
Anne Jancic from Bayer explained: "There is an increasing demand for snack vegetables and the Minigustos snack cucumber is the result of years of research and cultivation by skilled breeders and growers. But not only do we need confidence in the product itself but in the packaging. Key for us is to deliver a high quality product. Clondalkin Flexible Packaging were able to provide us with the ideal solution and we are delighted with the end result."
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Grootegast will be showcasing its MAP stand up pouch at Packaging Innovations in Birmingham, UK next month, stand C35.
Martina Fidder, Sales Manager at Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Grootegast, added: "It's always exciting to be involved in a new product launch and even more rewarding when we get to demonstrate our technical expertise and innovation as we have with the Minigustos brand.
"Our stand up pouches which offer sustainable, user friendly solutions as well as food protection and extended shelf life properties are becoming more and more popular "
Minigustos snack cucumbers, are available in premium supermarkets throughout Northern Europe. Bayer has already received market requests from customers in Canada, Australia, and China.

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will be exhibiting a unique range of products specifically designed for beverage packaging at their “Cool Packaging Café” during Brau Beviale in Nuremberg from 8th to 10th November 2016.
Visitors to the Cool Packaging Café will be able to see the company’s multi-award-winning FleXtreme® printed multipack shrink films as well as shrink sleeves printed with special tactile qualities. In addition, visitors will be entered into a prize draw to win a luxury handpresso espresso kit!
FleXtreme® provides print quality that is comparable to Gravure with very high ink and colour density at a more competitive cost level with the added flexibility of shorter production runs and lead times associated with Flexo. When used as the print technique for multipack drink solutions it is the best solution on the market for bundle wrapping beverages.
Tactile Shrink Sleeves provide an opportunity for brands to communicate more to the consumer through the packaging such as soft touch or relief areas to give a unique premium feel to the products.
Jack van der Heiden, Sales and Marketing Director at Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen said; “The beverages sector is a key area for us and a hotbed of innovation in product development that we echo with our own developments in packaging.
“Our FleXtreme® technique is hands down the best Flexographic print solution on the market and has been recognised by numerous awards in the last twelve months. When we combine this with the product solutions that we offer it creates added value for customers looking to differentiate.
“The tactile print solutions are something that warrants a very close inspection to see how they can add a new dimension to shrink sleeves and we look forward to showing visitors to our booth these two products and more.”
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will be exhibiting at booth 335 in hall 4 at Brau Beviale and invite brand owners to visit the “Cool Packaging Café” for a drink and a discussion about the latest packaging opportunities in the beverage sector.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Kirchberg has developed innovative solutions for tactile packaging.
The specialised producer of shrink sleeves and lidding solutions has integrated tactile features such as relief and soft touch into their printing technology for flexible packaging.
The tactile elements are an integral part of the designs and can be applied partially or across the entire surface of the product.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will debut this latest technology at the FachPack trade show from September 27-29 in Nuremberg, Germany.
Sander Kool, Sales & Marketing Director at Clondalkin Kirchberg, explains:
"Traditionally packaging has been used for visual communication, but tactile is now recognised as an important feature for communicating with customers at the point of sale as well.
"This new technology allows brand owners to create a premium experience for the consumer when they handle the product; a critical step in the buying process. Brand owners can communicate certain product characteristics to influence the consumer's perception and emotional connection, and have a positive impact on their buying behaviour. For example, our soft touch shrink sleeve is ideally suited to products such as liquid detergents where softness is an important product characteristic for the end consumer.
"This technology is revolutionary in flexible packaging and provides exciting opportunities in the area of multisensory packaging. In combination with the print, this opens a whole new window of opportunity for point of sale marketing and product differentiation"
Clondalkin Kirchberg is the leading European supplier of polyester lids, aluminium lids, shrink sleeves and coffee creamer lidding for a wide range of customers and applications.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will be attending Fachpack 2016 with a host of packaging solutions and award winning products to share with visitors. Innovations will include SkinTight ® , a film which reduces food waste through extending product shelf life; WENTOPRO®, a film which provides a high barrier against moisture and harmful mineral oils; and FleXtreme®, the printing technique that provides print quality comparable to Gravure with very high ink and colour density at a more competitive cost level.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will be attending Fachpack 2016 with a host of packaging solutions and award winning products to share with visitors.
High on the list of innovations on show Fachpack 2016 is the innovative SkinTight ® film which reduces food waste through extending product shelf life.
Designed to act like an invisible second skin around food products, SkinTight ® provides a natural look for maximum shelf appeal, as well as providing a safe and secure seal preventing against contamination and leakage. Unlike similar products in the market it is formulated to seal on all widely available films and trays and is compatible with all types of converting machines.
WENTOPRO® film is another product designed primarily for the food sector and provides a high barrier against moisture but also against harmful mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons (MOSH) and mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAH).
Mineral oil hydrocarbons derive from printing ink used in newsprint, which is commonly used to make recycled cardboard for food packaging. Some recent studies have linked these mineral oils to the inflammation of internal organs, including the liver, spleen and lymph nodes.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging will also be exhibiting the award winning FleXtreme® printing technique that has now won three industry awards thanks to the incredible print quality that the technique achieves.
FleXtreme® provides print quality that is comparable to Gravure with very high ink and colour density at a more competitive cost level with the added flexibility of shorter production runs and leads times associated with Flexo.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Sales and Marketing Director, Roy McAdoo said, “We are very excited with the developments we have been making across our product range and are looking forward to sharing them with visitors to Fachpack 2016.

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen Invests in Food Safe Packaging Technology
A market leader in frozen food packaging, Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen, has invested in a laser perforation unit to meet with the growing demand for 100 percent food safe packaging.
Laser perforated holes are clean of residue and therefore eliminate the possibility of contamination of the food product inside the packaging. In addition, they work at a much higher speed than mechanical pinfeed perforation systems and produce a very controlled, uniform pattern of holes in the film, tailored to the specific application.
Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen has invested in a Starpack CW laser unit. This Laser Scribing System from Rofin is developed for easy opening and ventilation of several types of packaging films. The cross web application allows optimum choice in free form scribing and perforation. Features include: perforation from 200 microns; cutting release flaps; easy opening scribing / scoring; optimized for various materials including PE, BOPP, PET, BOPA and laminates.
Commenting on the investment Sales and Marketing Director, Jack van der Heiden, at Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen said: "This is a very significant investment for Harlingen and our customers. Food safety is a top priority for Clondalkin and this investment gives our customers complete confidence in the safety of our packaging solutions. Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Bury (formerly Chadwicks) has designed and manufactured an innovative lidding solution for the capsules used in a revolutionary new tea machine. The T.O by Lipton™ is the result of 5 years R&D by brand-owner, Unilever and is entirely different to any other product on the market.
The tea machine, designed for the home, uses ‘loose’ tea-leaf capsules which release tea into a visible brewing orb in order to create the optimum brew, with different water temperatures and brewing times tailored to its individual tea variants. In total there are 33 specially blended varieties of tea and infusions available in the capsules. These range from classics such as Earl Grey, English Breakfast and Ceylon; to unique flavours such as Red Africa Rooibos, Luscious Lemon Verbena and Havana Lime.
All the capsules have perforated alufoil lids, specially designed and produced by Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Bury, which are critical to the operation of the machine. Its two prongs puncture the carefully placed perforations on the lids, allowing water to be ‘injected’ through one side and forcing the tea leaves out of the other side into the brewing chamber to infuse. There are also different lid sizes for the various different blends which contribute to setting the brewing cycle time and water temperature for that particular variety; as the machine can sense the different lid sizes and adapt its settings accordingly.
The lids are produced from alufoil with the variant name and brand logo de-embossed out of diamond pattern embossed foil, which was enabled by investment in new equipment. In total there are five ‘families’ of tea and infusion flavours and each is differentiated by individual coloured lids.
John Chadwick, Managing Director of Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Bury, comments: “We are delighted to be involved in producing such a high profile product, which presented us with a number of unique challenges. We needed to create lids of the highest quality which were easily perforable by the machine, yet robust enough to protect the integrity of the capsule, including the aroma and freshness of the product inside. We also had to manufacture the lids to a very tightly controlled tolerance, as the exact position of the perforations determines the functionality of the machine and the brewing process.
“The alufoil lids needed to have a premium look and feel, to reflect the high quality of the specially blended loose teas inside and the high-end spec of the product. We also had to produce five different colours of material that could be totally immersed during the brewing process and be guaranteed safe for human consumption. To ensure this, our materials underwent a rigorous external testing and certification process at the Intertek chemical testing laboratory, in The Netherlands.
.
“The end result is fantastic. Both the machine and the exceptional range of tea capsules produced are testament to the hard work and commitment of many people over the last five years. This is one of the highest profile product launches that Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Bury has ever been involved in and we look forward to seeing the success of the product over the coming months and years.”
William Leo, Research and Development Director for Unilever, comments: “We are all delighted with the finished T.O by Lipton™ product. The quality is second to none and the flavours taste fantastic. We first launched in France in September and we plan to roll out to other countries. Customer reviews so far have been excellent and we have advertising and retail sampling taking place to raise awareness of the product.”

Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen won the award for their unique FleXtreme® printing technology used to create the eye-catching packaging for the Bofrost “Suppengemüse” brand.
Sales and Marketing Director, Jack van der Heiden, from Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen, comments: “We are delighted to have won this award in recognition of the excellent results we have achieved for our client, Bofrost.
“FleXtreme®, which was developed here at Clondalkin Flexible Packaging Harlingen, represents a new generation in flexo printing that offers print quality comparable with gravure printing, but at a much more competitive cost level. It offers many advantages to customers including: shorter production runs, reduced lead times and excellent finished results, including very high ink and colour density.
“The packaging we produced for the Bofrost “Suppengemüse” brand was printed using only CMYK with an overall laquer to achieve a high intensity of colour and excellent quality finish. We achieved this using Sun Passion ink, minimum 54 dpcm screening and 460 line annylox rollers. Key to our success in doing this was the expertise and advice of Team WKA (Warburger Kliché Anstalt).
“We would like to thank Bofrost for their courage in allowing us to demonstrate this revolutionary Flexo technology and they are equally delighted. We faced tough competition from other finalists to win the award and the judges praised our team’s ‘co-operation and craftsmanship to achieve outstanding results’.”
