Curtain up for a premiere: Constantia Flexibles has developed a new generation of flexible packaging materials with excellent barrier properties that extend the shelf life of dry foods in flat or stand-up pouches. What’s special about it is the avoidance of complex multilayer laminates and the use of renewable raw materials. Interestingly, this has no impact on shelf life whatsoever.
In a nutshell, this environmentally friendly pouch material from Constantia enables the creation of a two-layer pouch with properties that are similar to those of a product made from a three-layer laminate. Normally, an aluminum layer forms the barrier, a PET layer the attractive exterior, and an internal PE layer the heat seal ability.
Constantia Flexibles now uses an innovative coating technology applied to a PLA-based sealant, which is combined with paper. The material simultaneously gives the packaging outstanding barrier properties, heat seal ability and rigidity. It can also be printed on as required.
This material is an important step towards the use of renewable materials for the packaging of dry foods. For more information, please get in touch with Paolo Battiston, Product Manager Business Unit Confectionery, Processed Food.
