Renowned internationally for producing a number of industry leading closures, Italian firm Giflor has won five times at this year's edition of the Starpack Industry Awards. Two of the company's closures were entered and managed to take top prizes based on a number of key features.
Giflor’s 844 is a bi-injected lightweight plastic cap and the perfect match between ethic and aesthetic. It is a catchy and colourful solution which guarantees reductions in energy, material consumption, and CO2 footprint. The 844 won three Starpack Awards:
- A "Greenstar Sustainable" Award, based on the closure's method of production. This award is typically given to a firm that can clearly demonstrate a packaging concept that in some way offers a less environmentally impacting solution. According to one of the judges, the "benefit of two color moulding minimizes the use of material".
- An "Inclusive Design" Award, which is given to firms that offer packaging which can be used by people with reduced dexterity or specific needs. In this case, one of the judges commented that "the easy opening cap with nice differential in colour qualifies this pack for an inclusive design award."
- A "Personal Care" Award, a general category that focuses on highlighting a piece of packaging's viability in the personal care market. The message in this case eas clear: "[It's a] Very well executed cap design with flexibility in application into the busy personal care market. A special note was given to the single click for closing and the use of the same sealing system for both orifice sizes."
Giflor's 772 cap is an extremely lightweight breakthrough solution for tubes: less plastic and energy consumption, logistic savings, and a smaller CO2 footprint (more tubes per truck, less trucks on the road). The 772 won two Starpack Awards:
- A "Greenstar Sustainable" Award and an "Inclusive Design" Award. Both awards were based on these closures being the result of "Good development that clearly shows a benefit," according to the panel.
Giflor also received high praise in the Winners' Guide. In the introduction to the document, Keith Barnes, The Packaging Society's Chairman, said "I must congratulate Giflor Plastic Caps on their numerous silver stars and Greenstar Sustainable Awards. Quite an achievement and let’s see more next year."
All winners of Starpack Industry Awards are automatically considered for the prestigious Worldstar Awards. The next edition, happening in spring 2017, is currently accepting submissions until the 14th of October.
