Highcon Delivers on the Promise of Mainstream Digital Finishing

    drupa 2016 a resounding success

     Yavne, Israel, June 22, 2016;

drupa 2016 was a major triumph for Highcon, with a staggering number of visitors and widespread interest which resulted in business success that will transform the company, founded only 6 years ago, by adding a record $42m of orders taken during the show. With 30 machines installed in 15 countries to date, Highcon is on the verge of doubling its installed base within months, delivering dozens of machines to new customers and into 11 new countries in Europe, Asia, Latin America and Africa. A further 100 sales proposals were issued at the show, many of which will come to fruition as new orders in the coming months. The company will be recruiting new distribution channels as well as R&D, Service and Sales personnel to support this rapid growth and new customers.

Highcon CEO & Co-founder Aviv Ratzman: “drupa 2016 has been a tipping point for our business and a real reinforcement of our vision. Our collaboration with leading designers from all over the world brought a throng of visitors to our booth, confirming the emphasis Highcon places on design creativity, while the orders we received were testament to the production capabilities of the Highcon digital cutting and creasing solutions which ran constantly throughout the show.

Sales to both new customers and existing customers have surpassed our expectations by far. drupa has been the confirmation that digital technology, and finishing in particular, has reached the point where it is making a mark on our industry. Many of the customers we met in drupa have realized the need to start investing in technology rather than continue to expand capacity, adding value to their products instead of competing on price.”

At drupa 2012 Highcon launched revolutionary digital finishing technology under the slogan of “Packed with Promise”. Only 4 years later, drupa 2016 demonstrated the fulfilment of that promise and a resounding validation of the company vision.  This was made evident not only by sales, but also with the enthusiastic affirmation by industry leaders that digital finishing is becoming a critical element in mainstream production processes. The spectacular displays designed by Wanda Barcelona, paper fashion by Merav Peleg, the 3,600 layer column from Michael Hansmeyer, and the huge popup book by Peter Dahmen, in conjunction with the dozens of customer samples on the booth, showcased precisely the far-reaching capabilities of these solutions.

The following products were showcased at drupa:

    • The Highcon Beam taking B1/42 in. digital cutting and creasing into mainstream production with up to 5,000 B1 sheets per hour.
    • The Highcon Pulse – B2/29 in. digital cutting and creasing machine with a smaller footprint at an affordable price
    • The Highcon Euclid III - third generation proven digital cutting and creasing machine with improved capabilities, quality and performance and brand new Variable Data Cutting and 3D Modeling.
    • Highcon Axis Web-to-Pack platform, a 2D to 3D solution that brings the benefits of a web-to-print system to all the players in the complex paper or cartonboard production supply chain
    • Highcon Shape – a technology preview of a 3D Modeling machine to be launched next drupa that will extend the Highcon Rapid Layer Manufacturing technology already in use, by adding assembly capabilities.

Yavne, Israel, July 6, 2016; The Highcon vision of bridging the gap between design creativity and production capability, combined with Eco Concrete’s relentless pursuit of new technologies, lie behind the spectacular 2 meter Morpheus bench. This extraordinary design, coming to life with the help of Highcon’s 3D modeling technology, will be presented in Taipei by Eco for the "Creative Roughness – Contemporary Israeli Design", part of a range of exhibitions being held during World Design Capital Taipei 2016 from July 9th until August 14th.

The concrete bench was designed by Eco Concrete Ideas and produced using Highcon Rapid Layer Manufacturing technology to cut 4,000 layers of paper, resulting in the creation of a complex mold in a low-cost method. Faster than CNC and eco-friendly, it uses recycled board and there is no adhesive between the layers. This is a breakthrough in mold technology opening huge opportunities in architecture and beyond.

According to Elad Gerufi, Co-owner of Eco Concrete, “The collaboration with Highcon, combining design and technology, unleashes a whole new world of potential freedom and creativity for architects and designers.”

Not only does Highcon technology dramatically reduce the costs of mold production, it also disrupts the creative cycle and dramatically cuts lead time. In the case of the bench, from first concept to completion was an unimaginable three weeks! Highcon customer, Skitza Print in Israel, produced the mold in a turnaround time of less than a week on their Highcon Euclid digital cutting and creasing machine, with actual production time of a few hours. The mold was made from standard recycled paperboard which was then filled with concrete. Extraction from the paper is simple and once finished, the mold was sent back to be recycled again.

Although Eco experts say that it would have been impossible to produce this design by any current conventional method, they estimate that the production of anything similar would have been around ten times more expensive and would have taken months rather than days.

The Morpheus bench was produced on the Highcon Euclid digital finishing machine with a dedicated 3D Modeling workflow solution that converts standard 3D models into separate layers that can be cut on Highcon machines. A paper mold can be produced quickly, with dramatic reduction in time and cost. Complex structures and textures can be created that are impossible in any conventional molding technology or in any known additive manufacturing technology. Fine details and smooth surfaces are achieved, when required, by very little post-processing.

Under the slogan of “Unleashing the Power of Paper” at drupa 2016, in Hall 9, C50, Highcon reveals an entire world of applications that can be achieved by their digital finishing customers. From traditional print applications such as folders and packages to paper fashion, large format display items, and all the way to 3D models made of paper.

Even before reaching the company’s booth, in the North entrance and in the drupa cube in Hall 6, visitors can see the amazing results made possible with Highcon’s technology. These spectacular displays, designed by Wanda Barcelona, were produced by Highcon customer Maison Lack by DLW on their Highcon Euclid digital cutting and machine on Arjowiggins Maine M1 paper. When first approached by the Messe Dusseldorf to produce their eye-catching displays, planned to be the hallmark of drupa 2016, Wanda were hesitant – they saw no way they could produce the kind of scale required. The collaboration with Highcon resulted in this truly memorable vision combining unique design elements that needed to be produced at an industrial pace.

Aviv Ratzman, Co-founder and CEO of Highcon said: “At drupa 2016 we are proving the strength of our vision of delivering digital technology that bridges the gap between design creativity and production capability.
The extensive range of different and exciting applications on our booth, from the paper fashion show, through to the general commercial and packaging products, and on to the 3D applications, were all produced on our digital cutting and creasing machines and we are proud to be introducing a whole new portfolio here at drupa.”

The surprise unveiling at the show is of the Highcon Shape 3D machine. Designed by Padwa Design, renowned industrial product and car des_MG_6089igners, this is a technology preview of Highcon’s new machine, implementing its Rapid Layer Manufacturing Technology aimed at transforming the 3D print world from rapid production to rapid manufacturing. The Highcon Shape, envisaged for release in drupa 2019, will deliver real life, large scale products from a file to reality, within minutes, using any kind of paper. This machine will produce products at high speeds and at costs that are unmatched by any 3D printing technology. The result is a truly revolutionary process to produce everyday items, such as furniture, which can be customized and personalized, and models for industrial use.

Previously announced at Highcon’s pre-drupa event, the Highcon portfolio of products will be running throughout the show on the booth. They will showcase compatibility with a large range of partners, from offset press manufacturers, and also B2 and B1 digital printing companies.
