Pujolasos' work with wood has paved the path for a true circular economy that demonstrates both luxury products and the beauty industry can be 100% sustainable and remain as polished and gorgeous as ever.
Wood is as Sustainable as it Gets
Through the European Green Pact, the EU has been promoting the reuse and recycling of packaging solutions all over the continent. However, most people are unaware of just how much more powerful wood is when compared with, for example, plastic. Among others, we'd like to highlight:
- Plastic takes about 500 years to degrade, whereas wood takes between 2 and 3 years to do so.
- Plastic is not biodegradable, it pollutes landfills and generates large amounts of CO2. Wood, on the other hand, decomposes naturally.
- Plastic is hard to properly recycle and most users do not know how to dispose of their plastic packs, yet wood is easy to recycle and doesn't need special methods to be responsibly discarded.
- Plastic is not a thermal insulator, but wood is, which naturally helps preserve the temperature of products.
An Investment in Circular Economy
Pujolasos' caps are developed with a circular economy in mind, which means several factors are taken into consideration during their manufacturing:
- Optimization of the raw material, wood.
- Reforestation of forests where the wood is obtained.
- Reuse of surpluses. For example, all the sawdust processed is turned into energy.
- Extraction of wood in a sustainable and respectful way to the environment.
- Reduction of both the water and energy used in production.
Stopping Unnecessary Waste
When wood has an uneven pattern, stains and/or large irregularities, it is often excluded by other companies. At Pujolasos we always take advantage of every piece. If faced with a rough-looking cap we varnish it with a darker tone to give it an outlet. However, it is sometimes unnecessary to go for darkening methods, since a vast number of clients understand the unique pattern the wood has is aesthetic pleasing and does not affect its function or quality.
As for the leftovers from manufacturing every individual cap, when they do not pass our quality test, they are stored in bags so that our neighbors can use them as firewood, further giving them a new and sustainable use.
