Last Saturday, the charity Run for Children was held for the twelfth time in Mainz, Germany. The largest charity run in the Mainz region brought in proceeds of 140,000 euros. This sum will soon be donated to non-profit charity organizations that support sick, handicapped and socially disadvantaged children.
The Run for Children has been organized at the initiative of Schott AG since 2006. This time, 70 teams with 2,500 runners took part in the event by running round after round for ten hours on the 400-meter course. The Schlossrunners, a team of students from Schloss-Gymnasium in Mainz, ran the most rounds (469) and won again for the seventh time. All of the teams in total ran nearly 22,800 rounds, or over 9,000 kilometers. This corresponds to the impressive distance from Mainz to Shanghai, China.
Team sponsors paid at least one euro per round into the donation pot. In addition, many companies and foundations made generous donations as sponsors and partners. Including this year’s result, the total donation sum increased to nearly 1.7 million euros since the first run in 2006.
Great summer weather, an attractive stage program with music and dance performances as well as a varied children’s program ensured that everyone was in a great mood. At the award ceremony, Dr. Frank Heinricht, Chairman of the Board of Management of Schott AG, and Chief Organizer Salvatore Ruggiero thanked the teams, sponsors and stage performers for their “great commitment to children.”
