SanDisk Case Study

In 2008, Sandisk, a storage device company in Milpitas, California approached Vakils Premedia for their packaging artwork development requirements.  At the time the company was creating packaging in-house and needed to reduce costs, increase productivity and keep head count low.  This venture would be a first for Sandisk who had never outsourced this work in the past.

The scope of work

Sandisk maintained control of the base package design, delivered the elements to Vakils Premedia to create all the variations for country, language, size, security, etc.  Each SKU could have as many as 150 variations.  The SanDisk MarCom team maintained a skeleton staff to manage the communications between Sandisk Marketing and Vakils. The volumes were flexible but averaged about 500 SKUs per month.  The average turn-around was 24 hours. The client-specific trained team can expand in response to increase in volumes with a few days’ notice.  Vakils Premedia worked with Sandisk to create a workflow that reduced errors and increased output. At the time of Vakils Premedia taking on the packaging work, Sandisk used a translation company to provide language files.  These files were stored on excel spreadsheets.  Vakils Premedia traced many of the file re-dos to translation errors and built a translation database that the translation company could use to store and retrieve repetitive translations and organize their work, greatly reducing re-translation and cutting costs.  It is still used 8 years later.

Additional work was offered in the form of image correction, datasheets and PowerPoint design as part of the on-going partnership between Vakils Premedia and Sandisk.

Result

Vakils Premedia and Sandisk have had a successful 8 year relationship.  For Sandisk, it meant a significant cost reduction, a steady headcount and a virtually error-free final output.
