What is LiquiGlide® technology?

What do your favorite shampoo, peanut butter, and ketchup have in common? It’s impossible to get all the product out of the packaging. On average, 5-20% of bottled and jarred products are wasted, shortchanging consumers and making packaging more difficult to recycle.

LiquiGlide® is a revolutionary, patented technology that enables the creation of durable reduced-friction surfaces, mitigating product waste and allowing used packaging to swiftly re-enter the supply chain. Each coating engineered with LiquiGlide® technology is created with a proprietary algorithm and components of the substance intended to slide across the surface. We custom-design the optimal coating for a product based on the packaging material and the intended contents, creating potential for unique outcomes beyond waste reduction. For example, our team has utilized LiquiGlide® technology to improve the efficacy of various biomedical devices and experiment with the visual properties of personal products.

How has your innovation already helped others?

In 2021, we worked with Colgate-Palmolive to introduce a frictionless toothpaste tube: Colgate Elixir. The tube is the first of its kind, using FDA-approved, flavorless, odorless food ingredients to coat the tube’s surface and create a frictionless toothpaste bottle.

NASA also found a beneficial use for LiquiGlide® technology aboard the International Space Station. In space, pesky biofilms grow rapidly, building up on equipment and negatively impacting astronauts’ health.

Instead of coating surfaces with metals or oxides to kill microbes, which allows biofilms to form from dead microbe buildup, researchers leveraged LiquiGlide® technology by impregnating the textured surface with a suitable lubricant. The approach successfully kept the microbes from sticking to surfaces in the first place, preventing the formation of biofilms.
