Rexam, a leading global beverage can maker, proudly announces that its La Selva plant near Tarrogona, Spain, has completed the conversion of its three final production lines from steel to aluminium. Starting in 2011 with the conversion of the first line, this major engineering project was completed on time and within budget.
The successful conversion of La Selva represents a significant investment and demonstrates Rexam's commitment to meeting the requirements of its Spanish customers to secure the company's long-term future in Spain. A key market for Rexam, Spain produces over seven billion cans a year, making it the second largest beverage market in Europe after the UK.
Speaking about the project completion, Iain Percival, Sector Director for Rexam Europe, says:
"After nine months of hard work and cooperation between the Spanish and global teams, we are thrilled to celebrate the successful conversion of the La Selva plant. The transition to aluminium demonstrates our confidence in the growth dynamics of the Spanish can market. We look forward to strengthening our relationships both strategically and proactively with our customers to provide the best in class quality and service at the right cost."
The Regional Minister of Business and Employment for Catalonia, Felip Puig, has called for "recognition of Rexam's presence in La Selva del Camp and in Catalonia and of the commitment to innovation and sustainability that we see today at this plant". According to the Minister, "Catalonia has a strong industrial tradition. At the Catalan government we are focusing on industry as the driver of growth in Catalonia, and investments like the one made by Rexam reaffirm the importance of industry as a key factor of social cohesion and economic progress". Finally he thanked the company for "its firm commitment to Catalonia".
Rexam currently operates two plants in Spain including La Selva and the Valdemorillo plant near Madrid. The conversion to aluminium for the Valdemorillo plant is set to begin later in 2015 with production planned for 2016.
