Recently, family-owned Spanish food producer Choví Group changed the material composition of its iconic packaging for the company’s garlic mayonnaise brand, Allioli. Now the pot includes 25% recycled plastic by using leading-edge material technology.

Serving as an excellent example of circular thinking, the Choví Group has just converted the signature mortar-shaped pot for its Allioli brand to a new material composition.

While the pot still shines on the supermarket shelves in its sunny yellow colour, it now includes 25% recycled polypropylene of the same quality as virgin plastic. Further, the entire pot is widely recyclable (naturally this depends on the availability of recycling infrastructure in the region of disposal). Hereby, Choví saves virgin materials and facilitates a reduction in the amount of plastic ending up in landfill.

    Sustainable partnership paves the way

The change in material composition of the injection-molded pot was made possible by an alliance between three companies: food producer Choví Group, packaging producer Berry Superfos and supplier of the recycled polypropylene Repsol.

All three companies hold the ISCC PLUS certification which is required to allow the use of recycled material for food product packaging. This certification ensures credible claims for circular materials, as well as traceability throughout the chain of custody.

David Moya, Industrial Director of Choví, says:

“The process path of developing our iconic Allioli pot to include recycled material has been a long but rewarding road – and the result is excellent. It was made possible thanks to our alliance with Berry Superfos and Repsol who have been perfect travel companions for us in this pioneering project to increase the sustainability of the Allioli pot.”

Creating great results – now and in the future

The Choví Group and Berry Superfos have been partners for more than 25 years and efforts to further develop the Choví Group’s packaging solutions will continue in the coming years. Ignacio Igea, Commercial Director Berry Superfos, Iberia, says:

"Our partnership with Choví is an example of the kind of relationship that we strive to establish with all our customers every day. It involves being innovative and providing state-of-the-art technology, dedicated service and commitment to more sustainable development.”

Recycled material for food packaging: now an option

Only recently did it become possible to produce food packaging made of polypropylene with recycled materials. This breakthrough for the food industry is due to new advanced pyrolysis technology enabling the recovery of waste streams that are not suitable for mechanical recycling. Since the converted materials end up having virgin plastic quality, they are suitable for food packaging, for example Choví’s Allioli mortar-shaped pot.
