BillerudKorsnäs' FibreForm Cap, the paper based cap for sparkling wine bottles has won the Special Jury Award at the 31st edition of Luxe Pack Monaco. The Luxe Pack 'in green' awards give recognition to the most environmentally friendly packaging solutions and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
FibreForm Cap is an innovative alternative to the traditional metal caps used for sparkling wine around the world. It looks just as good as metal including embossing and excellent print quality, but is made of 100% recyclable and 100% biodegradable primary fibre paper from well-managed forests.
- ”Sparkling wine bottles are currently capped with complex foils made of aluminum/PE. They remain on the bottle after use and are not recycled,” says Annica Rasch, Director Formable Solutions at BillerudKorsnäs. ”FibreForm Cap is easy to separate and send for recycling with other paper and carton materials.
- ”We see a large market for FibreForm Cap since both consumers and brand owners demand sustainable packaging. The transition can be smooth since existing wine capsule machines can be used,” says Christophe Delrive, Business Development Director at BillerudKorsnäs.
The motivation from the jury reads:
”The jury were keen to make special mention of the BillerudKorsnäs submission: the FibreForm Cap for champagne bottles. Its design makes it easy to remove; instead of the usual aluminum, the raw material used - BillerudKorsnäs FibreForm - is a sustainable packaging material made of 100% primary fibre. It is therefore 100% recyclable.
The jury wanted to encourage Billerudkorsnäs for this real innovation and for substituting a material firmly rooted in current practices but taking a paper approach.”
