The Red Dot Award in Berlin: Communication Design 2018 ceremony.

The perfect creative mix of design and wonderful print techniques, the iconic board game from the land of the Rising Sun is revisited by Favini, to conquer the international stage.

Favini wins the Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018 for design quality and creative achievement with their Kamizumo project.

Over several days, the experts examined, discussed and evaluated more than 8,600 international communication design works. The 24-member jury selected Favini’s Kamizumo for a prized Red Dot Award: Communication Design 2018, for the special paper version in Sumo of the iconic Japanese board game that replicates the national sport par excellence of Japan.

This stunning box allows you to have a direct experience with the thick Sumo board by Favini and to appreciate the potential of this material that inspires graphic designers.

Favini’s Kamizumo combines both Japanese and Occidental art, using a creative mix of design and printing techniques. The fun and curious board game, traditional in the Land of the Rising Sun, was revisited by the graphic studio Ansichtssache and the material expert Sylvia Lerch, to give a physical demonstration of the multiple possibilities offered by Favini’s Sumo board. A product named not by chance as its “thickness” is reference to the size of the wrestlers of the sport of the same name and also makes reference to their art skill, prestige and consistency.

Made with creativity and craftsmanship by skilled hands, almost handcrafted, Kamizumo is a board game that is out of the ordinary. It combines the playful side with the millenarian culture of Japan, and is full of historic symbols to be discovered. The box is a precious casket that holds the cards of the wrestlers and that acts as the sports arena. The characters, including their graphics and the chosen composition material of the game, express the Japanese charm and through the medium entertainment, reveals the culture that has fascinated the West for thousands of years.

Professor Dr. Peter Zec, founder and CEO of the Red Dot Award, had the following to say about the competition and the award: “For more than 60 years now, we have been providing designers, agencies and companies with a platform for evaluating good design. Those who participate in the Red Dot Award must be aware that our jury members demand very high standards of the entries. This becomes apparent in the intensive debates and discussions that take place in order for all of the experts to agree on a well-founded decision. All those who progress through the tough adjudication process to garner a Red Dot have every reason to be proud of themselves, as the jury grants our award only to creations of high design quality. This makes me all the more delighted to congratulate the laureates sincerely on their well-deserved success.”

At the Designers’ Night at Ewerk Berlin, Kamizumo received its well-earned certificate at the awards ceremony for the Red Dot Award on 26 October 2018. The project was presented to the international guests attending the event – as part of the winner’s exhibition “Design on Stage” which showcases the state of the art in worldwide communication design exclusively for one night.

“Being selected by the prestigious international Red Dot Award jury, has confirmed the value of the Kamizumo project. It was created to offer a direct experience with Sumo, the heavy premium board designed by Favini for packaging and the communication. It is an honour to gain recognition for this project which is the result of great teamwork. In fact, many valuable partners have contributed to the concept and creation of Kamizumo. From the creative director of graphic studio Ansichtssache Florian Sharinger and the materials consultant Sylvia Lerch, to the network of experts in print and paper processing, all of whom collaborated on this project with much dedication and passion “, says Elena Simioni, Product and Communication Manager of Favini.

The prize-winning project of Favini will also be included in the International Yearbook Communication Design 2018/2019, to be published on 15 November 2018 and distributed in 40 countries.
