The biofuel market is developing rapidly and in order to follow the direction set and be able grow its business, Perstorp now intends to acquire an existing biodiesel plant in Fredrikstad, Norway.

"We have ambitious growth plans for biofuels, now and in the future, and we see how the demand will increase to meet the global climate challenges. In order to grow with the market, we need to secure more production capacity, and with the Norwegian facility we can combine Perstorp’s unique expertise with existing equipment. With the new facility, we can almost double our current production capacity", says Lars Lind, Vice President Biofuels.

The acquisition will allow Perstorp’s customers in the Swedish market to grow with Verdis Polaris™, the premium brand of biodiesel. With the acquisition, the company will also be able to support the market in Norway, where environmental awareness is increasing and tougher legislation is coming.

The plant in Fredrikstad produces biodiesel from rapeseed oil just like Perstorp’s current biofuel plant in Stenungsund, Sweden. This acquisition will also add flexibility, allowing development the products even further, both from a winter performance point of view, and by facilitating introduction of other, non-crop based raw materials.

“I am very pleased to be able to conclude this transaction and look very positively on the prospect of continued support of our customers and the development of biofuels both in Sweden and in Norway”, Lars concludes.

The plant will operate under Perstorp’s current site in Stenungsund, and the ambition is to be up and running at the end of this year.

Perstorp and Corbion jointly announce a breakthrough innovation for adhesives. Resulting from a partnership agreement both companies signed in 2011, a new lactide caprolactone copolymer has been developed that delivers major benefits in hot melt adhesive applications. The product is part of Perstorp’s Capa™ Lactide and the two companies are market leaders in their respective fields of caprolactones (Perstorp) and lactides (Corbion). The new material is expected to be the first in a series of innovations for the adhesive industry.

The new product has a renewable content exceeding 80% and is fully compostable – providing adhesives manufacturers with a new technology to improve food safety aspects of packaging and at the same time meet the growing demand for more sustainable products. Equally importantly, the new material delivers no compromise on performance and allows formulators to remain competitive.

Corbion’s Senior Vice President Biochemicals, Marco Bootz, said: “This new material represents the culmination of two years’ joint development work with Perstorp. It will create a strong technology platform for the development of polymers that provide a genuine alternative to traditional materials like EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) and mPE (metallocene-catalyzed polyethylene) for the adhesive industry.”

“Through this partnership we provide adhesives manufacturers with a competitive advantage through safe innovative materials that deliver high performance with a reduced environmental footprint,” said Håkan Björnberg, Vice President Innovation at Perstorp. “We expect this innovation to be the first of many.”

The new Capa™ product is expected to be commercially available in the final quarter of this year and will be brought to market by Corbion.

New Chinese scientific research once again confirms the power of ProPhorce™ SR: with 2% less feed, the daily growth remains the same. The scientific research was done by professor Yang of the Shandong Agricultural University. He and his team tested ProPhorce™ SR on a group of broilers: healthy animals under normal circumstances. The findings show that with ProPhorce™ SR a significant difference has been realized with regard to the feed conversion. At the same time the research shows constant growth rates. The research corroborates the good results which have been achieved with ProPhorce™ SR in Europe.

    Strong development of the villi
Professor Yang from Shandong Agricultural University: “The research shows that you need 2% less feed when using ProPhorce™ SR in order to realize the same daily growth. The length of the villi is increased by the use of ProPhorce™ SR. We have established that the length of the villi increases up to 35%. The animal’s feed uptake capacity is enhanced by the strong development of the intestinal wall, so the chicken will use the feed more efficiently. This results in a lower feed conversion.”

    Better results
Geert Wielsma, product manager at Perstorp Feed & Food, is impressed by the figures. “It is a confirmation of the power of ProPhorce™ SR. Less feed, more results. I would like to add: better results for the farmer. That’s what it is all about in the end. With ProPhorce™ SR we enhance the results for the farmers.”

    ESPN Prague 24 – 27 August
Geert Wielsma continues: “During the European Symposium on Poultry Nutrition 2015 in Prague my colleagues and I will elaborate on the research results. During the congress Perstorp will organize a mini symposium for the visitors of the congress. Then we will focus on ProPhorce™ SR in view of the Chinese research, earlier scientific researches and field testing."

    Perstorp Feed & Food
Perstorp is one of the main sponsors of the ESPN in Prague. The Swedish multinational strives for healthy animals and healthy food by the implementation and continuous innovation of solutions for the enhancement of the intestinal development and feed conversion. For instance new product ranges such as ProPhorce™ SR and ProSid™ MI 700 are based on innovative ester-technologies. It is characteristic of the power of an organization which applies itself to reliable and safe products.

Perstorp, a world leader in specialty chemicals, today announces the acquisition of the Penta, Di-Penta and sodium formate businesses, related technology and certain assets from Koei Chemical Company Ltd., a Japanese chemicals producer. As part of the business transfer, Koei Chemical Company Ltd. will act as Perstorp’s agent in Japan, which will secure continuous high service and reliable partnership with our highly valued customers in the Japanese market.

The transaction is fully in line with both companies’ strategies going forward. For Perstorp, this is an important part of an ambitious plan to strengthen the position in the Asian Market and to add a platform for investment in order to long term expand the Penta business.

“Penta is a core business area within Perstorp and these products have been instrumental in the development of Perstorp as an international company. The acquisition is line with with Perstorp's strategy to drive growth and in particular in the Asia Pacific region. It demonstrates our commitment and ability to add high quality businesses to an already strong portfolio.” Perstorp President and CEO Jan Secher says.

“This action empowers Perstorp’s ambitious investment plan to increase Penta and Di-Penta capacity supporting our customers’ long-term growth. There has been significant planning to ensure sufficient capacity to supply both current and new customers. Perstorp has already successfully incorporated the TMP business from Koei in the past and we are very confident that this transaction will follow the same level of high customer satisfaction.”, says Ulrika Andersson, Vice President Business Unit Penta.

Penta is used to enhance the properties in applications such as alkyd resins, PVC stabilizers, synthetic lubricants and varnishes. Perstorp is now producing Penta in three different production plants in Germany, the US and Sweden. The initiative confirms Perstorp’s leadership in the Penta market.

eading specialty chemicals company Perstorp AB (part of Perstorp Group) today announces the sale of its remaining part of shares in Polygiene AB to Pooly Holding AB. The divestment is in line with Perstorp’s strategy to focus on and expand its core specialty chemicals activities.

Introduced in 1999 as a product from Perstorp AB, a new and innovative antimicrobial technology quickly gained recognition as an effective and environmentally friendly antimicrobial technology using natural silver salt. Polygiene AB was founded in 2006 as a separate company with Perstorp AB as its principal owner with approximately 30% ownership.

“The sale of Polygiene is a natural step in our strategy of focusing on growing our core technical platforms. The transaction provides Polygiene with an opportunity to develop their business and strong brand with a new owner who is focusing on the antibacterial and textile industries”, says Perstorp’s President & CEO Jan Secher.

Perstorp has during the last year gone through an extensive internal transformation with the primary objective to enable a stronger customer interface. New ways of working have unlocked the organization’s ability to reach its full potential and build for the future. 2015 is the year for delivery on all the committed change projects and an even increased focus on its core business within specialty chemicals.

“Perstorp has started a major transformation process. I’m very happy to see that people are onboard and I have confidence in the direction we are heading in, of which this transaction is also part”, concludes Jan Secher.

Producers of surfactants and hard-surface cleaners around the world now have access to a major new supply of a highly cost-effective raw material, 2-propyl heptanol (2-PH). With the January start-up of its major new Oxo plant for chemical intermediates and finished products in Stenungsund, Sweden, Perstorp now has sufficient capacity to supply 2-PH to the merchant market as well as its own downstream operations.

Perstorp is now concluding Project Valerox, its largest plant investment ever, and the new Oxo plant is already manufacturing industrial quantities of various key materials—including 2-PH—for numerous applications, including plasticizers and lubricants. Most output is currently consumed internally in production of Perstorp’s Emoltene™ 100 PVC plasticizer, but Perstorp has now also become a significant supplier of 2-PH on the open market. The Oxo plant will be a reliable and stable source of this important raw material for surfactants.

“The global surfactants industry is increasingly calling for C10 fatty alcohols and our new capacity for high-purity 2-PH is an answer to that call,” says Jerker Olsson, Vice President Business Unit Oxo at Perstorp. “Our customers will be able to count on a reliable long-term supply of this very attractive alternative to existing offerings.”

Surfactant producers currently rely to a large extent on natural and synthetic C9-C12 linear and branched alcohols. These have recently been subject to swings in availability and price volatility. The new Perstorp facility now provides more stability to the supply side of the market while also offering consumers a product that has a highly attractive set of properties.

“2-PH is an excellent raw material for alcohol ethoxylates used in surfactants,” says Håkan Björnberg, Vice President Innovation. “It can be used as a replacement for other short-chain branched C9-C12 alcohols, as well as linear alcohol mixes.” 2-PH ethoxylates typically have excellent wetting power, good emulsifying power and good solubility. They have high surface activity and they are easy to combine in formulations.

“Ethoxylates based on Perstorp’s 2-PH offer a superior balance between wetting and foaming,” says Björnberg. “This product also has a good water solubility, making it an excellent choice for hard surface cleaning, and is easy to rinse off. It has a low tendency to form gels, good stability, and a degreasing power that is better than most other types and can replace nonylphenol ethoxylates (NPEs).”

Perstorp also intends to offer 2-PH as a raw material for adhesives and lubricants. 2-PH acrylates offer increased tackiness and better low temperature performance for pressure sensitive adhesives formulations, for example, while 2-PH esters with adipic acid, find use in engine oils and gearbox lubricants.
