An electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when electrical equalization takes place between two objects. This voltage pulse can damage or even destroy electrical components. Small high-performance components are especially vulnerable.
How does ESD arise? Electrostatics can be generated by surface friction between two objects that were originally neutral. Walking over a carpet for example. Frequent contact and separation causes an imbalance in voltage that can suddenly discharge. This is the small shock we experience when we touch a door handle.
The ESD effect can be prevented with the use of an electrically conductive packaging solution. By using ESD additives or compounds in manufacturing, these packaging materials have a low surface resistance. This stops the packaging from getting electrostatically charged, and protects the contents from being affected by any voltage imbalance.
