We were recently faced with a real challenge. An international sugar producer wanted to make their packaging more sustainable. They also wanted to improve the tamper-evident function and refine the sprinkling of the icing sugar. The result: a completely redesigned, 100% recyclable shaker with an ingenious dispensing system.

Smaller and lighter packaging

SFA Packaging has developed a new concept for 100% recyclable shaker packaging for a major international sugar producer. This new mono-material packaging represents not only a major step towards a sustainable future, it has also been designed to give the consumer the best user experience.

The customer’s wishes

To optimise the weight, we looked at if the existing content sizes were still necessary and whether we could perhaps reduce the headspace required for filling the product, for example. We found that a smaller and therefore lighter packaging could replace the existing larger solutions without any problems.

Together with our customers, SFA Packaging is constantly looking for innovative ways to optimise both our packaging and its ease of use. In this particular project, in addition to the desire for increased sustainability, the customer also wanted to improve the tamper-evident function and refine the sprinkling of the icing sugar. To achieve this, SFA Packaging developed a tailor-made lid.

Clear starting points

The client’s existing multi-material packaging no longer meets the standards defined in the new sustainability guidelines adopted by many large retail chains. These state that packaging should consist of only one material that is also 100% recyclable.

One of the requirements in the new guidelines is the ‘tamper-evident’ function, which allows consumers, at the time of purchase, to see at a glance if the product has already been opened. Our customer wanted to make this feature more user-friendly.

We were also given the task to provide the end user with multiple options for dispensing the icing sugar. And, last but not least, it was important that any changes did not impact the production line or the boxes used to ensure the product reaches to the supermarket shelves unscathed. All-in-all a great challenge to realise a significant improvement!

The power of experience and expertise

Based on the above specifications, SFA Packaging began by transforming the existing shaker into a 100% mono-material copy. We then went on to design a new lid that would meet all the requirements.

This multi-functional dispensing cap incorporates an ingenious dual-valve system with integrated tamper-evident functionality, and allows consumers to dispense the required amount of icing sugar. This is thanks to one opening with 5 larger holes and one with 9 smaller holes.
